Supplements for Detoxing
While I'm not a fan of "cleanses", we should support our organs of elimination
I often get asked about “detoxes” for weight loss, etc. I am not a fan of such an approach, however that doesn’t mean that we can’t support our organs of elimination when needed.
Per my latest podcast episode called Detox 101, you can listen in on how I suggest folks approach detoxification intellegently and incorporating sweating, muscle and nutrition.
That’s not to say that I don’t give my body some assistance in the process. Some of my favorite supplements are listed below. All of these can be found inside my store.
Protein:
On the podcast I shared about how protein actually assists with phase 2 liver detox and why we need to ingest adequate animal protein. Problem is, most people don’t eat enough protein. I’m talking 1 gram per pound of body weight. I have a very hard time myself somedays. That’s where a high quality, grass-fed, clean sourced whey protein powder can be very helpful. It’s easy to drink, it’s quick to digest and as someone with low appetite with a history of gut issues, protein powder is all I can handle some days. I would NEVER tell you to use protein powder as a meal replacement, but for those trying to detox or lose weight, protein powder can indeed donate necessary amino acids to phase 2 liver detox and bring about high satiation. Especially important for our elderly population. I put every elder patient on my protein powder. Check out my Post-Lift Whey. I truly think it’s one of the best quality and best tasting whey protein powders out there.
Lymph Support:
Our body contains more lymph than blood. Lymph vessels run alongside your vascular and nerve supply to keep everything cleaned up and moving. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have its own pump to help drain fluids from tissues. It’s crucial to balanced hormones and a well functioning immune system. I always think of that line in the original Dune movie from the 80’s where they say, “The Spice must flow!”. The lymph must flow as well. Aside from movement and sauna, my favorite way to support my lymph system is with LymphActiv. It’s carbon based technology that offers a powerful blend of eight herbs to support the body’s natural detoxification processes and lymphatic motion needed to support drainage — including astragalus root, chuchuhuasi bark, rhubarb root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm, and soursop leaf. Check out LymphActiv here.
TUDCA:
TUDCA stands for Tauroursodeoxycholic acid. It is a bile acid derivative that occurs naturally in the body. Traditionally we think of bile salts as supporting the gall bladder and digestion, and while TUDCA has been used traditionally in Chinese medicine for a long time, it’s only more recently been embraced by Western functional medicine doctors and professionals. We need bile to digest our fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E and K. We need it for healthy liver bile ducts and digestion, but turns out this molecule is also supportive of the kidneys, another huge organ of elimination. It’s shown to be supportive of the brain as a nootropic, supports optimal metabolic health, mitochondria, gut microbiome and has even shown efficacy in psoriasis, which is essentially a leaky gut disease at the end of the day. This is a POTENT product and so I encourage anyone using it to start at 1/2 to 1 cap a day and if they want to work up from there to consult a health professional. Check out Advanced TUDCA here. Also formulated with advanced carbon technology to improve detoxification efforts.
Kidney & Liver Support:
Both the kidney and liver are huge organs of elimination. I didn’t used to think that taking a kidney or liver support supplement we efficacious, but those of you in the know in natural medicine realize that supporting these two systems is key if you want to move the needle. Herbs and nutrients like NAC can be VERY helpful in this endeavor. My favorite product for this, hands down, is KL Support. This blend combines herbs and nutrients traditionally used to support kidney and liver health, including beetroot, collinsonia (stoneroot), gynostemma, marshmallow root, milk thistle seed, NAC, and parsley leaf. Also formulated with carbon technology. Some of my favorite ingredients for this purpose! We need to keep these organs of elimination happy and moving. I particularly find the combo of LymphActive, TUDCA and KL Support together to be quite synergistic. I use these daily myself to keep the “middle-aged puff” when it creeps up on me. I use them in harmony with my sauna therapy. You can find KL Support in my store here.
Mimosa Pudica Seed:
Like it or not, we all get exposed to parasites. If your system is struggling to deal with them, it often will impact your liver. That “middle-aged puff” I mentioned? I honestly think it’s due, in part, to stagnant lymph and liver function, due in part to parasites. I know, yuck, right? Beyond that, we ALL need to poop well to detox well. So many patients came into my practice thinking that their occasional bowel movements were normal. Pooping a few times a week is NOT normal. You should be pooping at least once a day, if not a few times a day! If you’re not pooping regularly you are recycling all of those toxins and hormones BACK into circulation via your gut. Healthy poops are the way this stuff mainly gets out of your body. I’ve found something that helps with BOTH the potential parasite issue and the lack of pooping issue. Trust me, I’ve tried EVERY gut product out there and this is one of my all time favs. I think of it as a gentle parasite eliminator and good poop generator! Para1 is the mimosa pudica seed product you can find inside my store.Naturally gelatinous, Para 1 becomes jelly-like and sticky as it makes its way through the GI tract. This encourages the removal of occasional intestinal buildup, supports the gut microbiome, and promotes the body’s natural ability to detoxify. Check out PARA 1 here.
That’s my own simple personal protocol that I use and I hope you found this helpful!
